What is the life of a five-year-old worth to you?
Imagine you are a 5 year old in Toronto. Your future is in front of you. That future could be a climate like right now, or a doubling of droughts, fires and storms in just 50 years. The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Illustrates it like this:
The low emissions path shown in the chart means reducing our use of gas and natural gas to almost zero in 15 years, by 2040. So, how have we been doing?
We have achieved nothing in 15 years.
It’s not lack of money, or lack of technology, it’s lack of political courage. Upper levels of government control the city but there’s still a lot we can do: Toronto controls demand, and if demand stops, supply stops. And Toronto owns Toronto Hydro which is an important tool in the fight to electrify everything.
Here’s my pledge to you:
I will fight to preserve Toronto’s current climate target, which is in line with giving today’s five-year-olds a future.
I will not support symbolic actions like that have little effect.
I will call out disinformation from the fossil fuel industry.
Yes, we need to turn off the gas. Vote for me if you dare.
